Elephant families
Amboseli is one of the best places in Kenya to watch elephants up close as they feed and move between the swamps.

Kenya · Southern Kenya, near the Tanzanian border
Elephants beneath Africa's highest mountain.
Amboseli National Park lies at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, just across the border from Tanzania. Its swamps, fed by water from the mountain, draw elephant families and other wildlife across an otherwise dry plain.
The place
Amboseli is compact and open, with dry lake beds, grassland and green swamps. Groundwater from Kilimanjaro rises in the swamps, creating year-round water and grazing.
The park is best known for its elephant families, including large-tusked bulls, and for the view of Kilimanjaro, which is often clearest early in the morning.
Our budget safaris stay at Nyati Safari Camp, outside the park.
The park covers about 390 square kilometres within a much larger landscape shared by Maasai communities and wildlife. Elephants move between the park and the surrounding group ranches, which is one reason the area is so important for their conservation.
Amboseli's elephants have been studied continuously since the early 1970s, one of the longest-running studies of wild elephants anywhere. Many families are known individually, and they are used to vehicles, which often allows calm, close viewing.
Planning notes
The appeal
Amboseli is one of the best places in Kenya to watch elephants up close as they feed and move between the swamps.
On clear days the snow-capped summit rises behind the park, often best at sunrise.
A viewpoint over the swamps and plains, and a place to stretch your legs.
Green marshes fed by the mountain's groundwater attract elephants, buffalo, hippos and birds.
Wild encounters
Elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, hippos in the swamps, lions, cheetahs and hyenas, and many waterbirds. Wildlife is free-ranging, so sightings vary from day to day and can never be guaranteed.

Elephant country
Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to spend time with elephant families. The swamps give them water and grazing all year, so they move through the park in predictable daily rhythms.
Long-term research has followed these families for decades. Watching a matriarch lead her family across the open plain, with Kilimanjaro behind, is the image many travellers come for. It is common, but like every sighting it depends on the day.
Travel through the year
June to October and January to February are the driest periods, but Amboseli works year-round. Kilimanjaro is often hidden by cloud by midday, so early drives give the best chance of seeing it.
Usually dry and warm, with good visibility and wildlife gathering near water.
The long rains. The park turns green and dusty roads can become muddy.
Dry season. Animals concentrate around the swamps and visibility is often good.
Short rains bring brief showers and fresh grass.
Your way of travelling
Optional activities are arranged separately and may cost extra.
01
Drive between the green swamps, where elephants wade and feed, and the dry lake beds where zebras, wildebeest and gazelles graze.
02
One of the few places in the park where you can leave the vehicle, with a short climb to a view over the swamps and plains.
03
The mountain is usually clearest at first light, which makes the early drive the best time for photographs.
04
An optional visit to a neighbouring Maasai community can be arranged, on the hosts' terms and at extra cost.
The way there
Around four to five hours from Nairobi via the Nairobi–Mombasa highway or the Namanga road.
Scheduled flights from Wilson Airport serve the Amboseli airstrip.
The Namanga border is close, so Amboseli links easily with Arusha and the northern Tanzania parks.
Finding your pace
An afternoon and a morning drive, as on our 2-day safari.
A full day in the park and more time for Kilimanjaro views.
