Before you choose

Planning an East African safari.

The right journey depends on your time, your travel companions and what you hope to see. These are useful starting points.

01

Kenya or Tanzania?

Both offer superb wildlife. Kenya suits shorter trips from Nairobi; Tanzania's northern circuit is larger in scale. Many travellers combine both.

02

Private or group?

Private safaris let you set the pace; group-joining safaris share a vehicle with other travellers and cost less per person.

03

How long to travel

Two to four days can focus on one or two parks. A week or more allows several destinations and a slower pace.

04

Choosing accommodation

Budget, mid-range and luxury describe where you sleep, not the wildlife you will see from the vehicle.

05

When to travel

Wildlife movement and weather change through the year. The migration moves with the rains, and sightings are never guaranteed.

06

Prices

Many budget safaris have published prices. Mid-range, lodge and luxury safaris are quoted for your dates.
