Day 1 / Nairobi → Amboseli
Drive south-east from Nairobi to Amboseli, a journey of about four hours through open Maasai country towards the Tanzanian border. Arrive at your lodge around the middle of the day and settle in, then head out on an afternoon game drive as the light softens. Amboseli is known for its elephant families and for the view of Kilimanjaro rising beyond the park, often clearest towards evening.
Day 2 / Amboseli National Park
A day shaped around Amboseli's best light. Morning and afternoon game drives cross the park's swamps and plains, where elephants feed in the green marshes, and buffalo, hippos and wading birds share the water. In between, return to the lodge for a relaxed midday break. Early morning is often the best time to see Kilimanjaro clear of cloud, so it is worth being out at first light.
Day 3 / Amboseli → Lake Naivasha
A sunrise drive in Amboseli, with a final chance to photograph Kilimanjaro, before the long journey north to Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley. It is a full day of travel, so the afternoon is kept deliberately quiet: relax by the water, or take a boat ride on the lake to look for hippos, pelicans and fish eagles.
Day 4 / Lake Naivasha → Maasai Mara
Leave Lake Naivasha and cross the Rift Valley towards the Maasai Mara, as farmland gives way to open grazing country and the wide horizons of the Mara. Arrive at your lodge around midday and settle in, then set out on an afternoon game drive into the reserve, the first of several chances to explore one of Africa's great wildlife landscapes.
Day 5 / Maasai Mara National Reserve
Spend the day in the Maasai Mara National Reserve as suits you: a full day out with a picnic, ranging further across the plains, or two shorter drives with a break at the lodge. The reserve's open grasslands, riverine forest and acacia woodland each attract different wildlife, and your guide follows current movements and conditions. Ask us about an optional hot-air balloon flight at dawn, subject to weather and availability, for a quiet view over the plains as the sun comes up.
Day 6 / Maasai Mara → Nairobi
A final early game drive in the Mara, then return to the lodge to pack and check out. The journey back to Nairobi is by road, through Narok and up the Rift Valley escarpment, or by scheduled light aircraft from a Mara airstrip if you have chosen to fly, which turns a long drive into a short, scenic flight.
